We have a huge responsibility coming up on September 12 of this year. Now I am probably one of 100 people who actually know that September 12 is the date of the primary election. What is even more important than knowing the date is the responsibility we have to choose the right candidates. Now if history is any lesson, any Republican who can muster 8,000 votes will more than carry the day and move on to the general election. You may think, “Wow, all I need to get is 8,000 votes to win the primary.” The answer would simply be, “Yes, that’s all.” In a county with approximately 235,000 citizens, 60,831 are registered Republican. Since we all know that this is certainly a Republican strong-hold, we need to understand these statistics. Since it is unlikely that any new Democrats will win in this county (we’re doing our best to get rid of the two we do have), it is a great responsibility we 16,000 Republicans have on September 12. We need to give the rest of the citizens of this county the best. The upcoming primary will ultimately determine who represents us in our government. There are many candidates who have been around for a long time and we need to ask, “Why?” Is it because they have done a great job or is it because we have grown familiar with their names. In some cases we cannot even name the people who represent us. Until last year I did not even know who our sheriff was. I knew Meadows was a disaster but I did not know who replaced him. I think that is a reason for concern. When was the last time you saw your representatives. Council President Wagner has acted like a downright liberal on many issues. Should these guys be given a free pass because they are used to driving to Annapolis or we like the colors of their signs. I think not. These people are supposed to represent us and we need people who actually care about us in these important positions. These people wave at us every four years and expect us to give them our votes. This year may be a bit different for me. I have actively involved myself in the campaigns of several individuals that are not currently in office. I think the primary is a time for us to challenge each other so that we send only the best to Annapolis (or Main Street). It is important that we 8,000 citizens inform ourselves about all the candidates so that we can make the best choice. And always remember, incumbents do not always make the best choice.
